What is a Flag Placement Volunteer?

Flag Placement Volunteers are responsible for correctly placing all of the flags during our placement event for Memorial Day.

Things to consider before volunteering:

Each registered volunteer is responsible for 60-90 flags, which will weigh up to 15 pounds. Please make sure you are physically able to lift upwards of 15lbs for an extended period!
Children 12 and under cannot be counted towards the total number of people you register for. This is because we only account for those who are able to independently commit to the 60-90 flags. For example, if you’re registering for yourself, husband, daughter (14) and son (10) you would only register for 3 people.
Flag Placement will happen rain or shine, dress for the weather!
We highly recommend bringing a screwdriver to help create an initial pilot hole at each headstone, this helps especially when the ground is dry.
We encourage you to wear gloves. Many volunteers in the past have gotten blisters from placing so many flags!

Cemetery Rules

1. No running in the cemetery.

2. No leaning on, sitting on, or resting body or limbs on headstones or monuments.

3. Do not pick up any flowers or flags (unless the flag has fallen to the ground).

4. Do not touch any of the coins that were placed on top of the headstones or around the headstone.

5. No advertising of any kind while on the cemetery grounds. This includes company apparel.

6. Do NOT disrupt visitors at graves. You may ask to place the flag for them. However, if they deny the request, kindly give them a flag so that they can place it themselves.

7. No littering, please ensure that you are picking up after yourselves.

Q • How long is my shift?

A • This will depend on how long it takes you to place all your assigned flags. You can expect your shift to last about 3 hours.

Q • When should I arrive at the cemetery?

A • To keep the day on schedule we ask that you arrive at the start of your shift (do not arrive early).

Q • Where do I check-in?

A • A week or so before your scheduled shift, you will be sent an email with additional information, including a cemetery map of where to check-in and parking information.

Q • When registration fills up, will there be a waitlist?

A • Due to the organizational undertaking that would entail, we don’t have the capacity to do that at this time. We highly encourage you to view our other available volunteer opportunities.

Q • Can I bring an additional person or people?

A • We aren’t restricted by the number of people like we once were, so you may bring additional people. However, it’s important to note that you will only be given flags for the people you registered for.
