What is a Headstone Usher?

The Headstone Ushers are essentially our quality control team during Flag Placement. They ensure that every Flag Placement volunteer is following directions and properly placing the flags. They are also in charge of directing Flag Placement Volunteers so that every headstone receives a flag.

Things to consider before volunteering:

  • You will be standing for the duration of your shift, if this isn’t something you will physically be able to handle, please consider another volunteer position. 
  • We rely on our Headstone Ushers to ensure Flag Placement volunteers follow directions properly. If you’re not confident in your ability to lead and guide people as needed, you may want to consider a different volunteer position.

YOU WILL BE STANDING
for the duration of your shift, please wear appropriate footwear!

YOU WILL RECEIVE SOME GUIDANCE
prior to other volunteers arriving, so don’t be nervous!

Cemetery Rules

1.  No running in the cemetery.

2.  No leaning on, sitting on, or resting body or limbs on headstones or monuments.

3.  Do not pick up any flowers or flags (unless the flag has fallen to the ground).

4.  Do not touch any of the coins that were placed on top of the headstones or around the headstone.

5.  No advertising of any kind while on the cemetery grounds. This includes company apparel.

6.  Do NOT disrupt visitors at graves. You may ask to place the flag for them. However, if they deny the request, kindly give them a flag so that they can place it themselves.

7.  No littering, please ensure that you are picking up after yourselves.

Asked Questions

A • You can expect your shift to last anywhere between 3 to 4 hours.

A • To keep the day on schedule we ask that you arrive at the start of your shift.

A • A week or so before your scheduled shift, you will be sent an email with additional information, including a cemetery map of where to check-in and parking information.

A • Headstone Ushers need to feel comfortable and confident in their role of quality control. If they see flags being placed incorrectly or rules not being followed, they have to be able to speak up. This is a difficult skill for many people, and in the past we’ve seen adults are more successful in the role compared to children. We wouldn’t recommend anyone under 16 sign-up to be a Headstone Usher.
